During World War I, Mary was appointed the first-ever Reconstruction Aide of the US Army Medical Corps. In this role she used modern physical therapy techniques to rehabilitate wounded soldiers. Throughout the war, reconstruction aides, the predecessors to modern physical therapists, worked tirelessly to do their part, treating the many casualties of war and getting soldiers back on their feet. These strong women had proven their value as medical professionals (war heroes) and shown that those who would eventually be known as physical therapists had a major role to play in the future of world’s health.
On March 24, 1921, and Mary McMillan was elected to serve as the first president of American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association. (AWPTA) later, the name was changed to “the American Physical Therapy Association”(APTA) or fledgling society of women who all were accomplished leaders of their profession. McMillan promised to do everything in her power “to live up to the trust and confidence” bestowed upon her by those who elected her.
So her dedication, bravery and hardwork has made a unique stand for the field of physical therapy. And this is how she is often known as the mother of Physical therapy.
Now, What are the Specializations & Career scopes in Physical Therapy..?
Physiotherapy career can rise to a variety of challenging & interesting jobs in the health care system. As Physical therapy is a professional career which has many specialties including musculoskeletal, orthopedics, cardiopulmonary, neurology, endocrinology, sports medicine, geriatrics, pediatrics, women’s health, wound care and electromyography. You can also get a doctorate degree & work in the research field. But before 3 yrs of doctorate degree you have have to complete 4½ yrs of Bachelor’s and 2 yrs of master’s degree in physical therapy.

The normal pay package for a Physiotherapist working in a hospital starts with a minimum Rs. 5-6 lakhs per annum but it totally depends on you and on your skills, knowledge, ideas, smartwork and hardwork so that you can earn as much you can and you want.

So, Yes you can..! But there’s a condition, you have to put PT too as suffix of your name. Here PT denotes a Physical Therapist.
Even according to the latest Allied and Health Professionals act, Physiotherapists are legally Doctors in India now.
Allied health professional: The Bill defines allied health professional as an associate, technician or technologist trained to support the diagnosis and treatment of any illness, disease, injury, or impairment. Such a professional should have obtained a diploma or degree under this Bill. The duration of the degree /diploma should be over a period of two to four years.
Healthcare professional: A healthcare professional includes a scientist, therapist, or any other professional who studies, advises, researches, supervises, or provides preventive, curative, rehabilitative, therapeutic, or promotional health services. Such a professional should have obtained a degree under this Bill. The duration of the degree should be at least over a period of three to six years.
Allied and healthcare professions: The Bill specifies certain categories of allied and healthcare professions as recognized categories. These are mentioned in the Schedule to the Bill and include life science professionals, trauma and burn care professionals, surgical and anesthesia related technology professionals, physiotherapists, and nutrition science professionals. The central government may amend this Schedule after consultation with the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Profession.
So, no matter how many branches you have to apply, Physical Therapists are legally Doctor now in India. So, the answer is “yes” physiotherapist puts a tittle “Dr.”
